Fourth Session

My session with Charlene was an eye opener in regards to spelling and word definitions. I gave about six vocabulary words from an expository text last week as homework. She was to find the meanings of these words. She didn't quite do it right. She also had many spelling errors on the the word list that placed her as Independent. I didn't place too much emphasis on these skills during assessment last semester because she read the words beautifully. Now I know what to do. I'm still trudging along with trying to get her engaged in a flowing conversation one-on-one with me especially on the ride home from UOG.

  1. It sounds like Charlene is making progress Lucille! I am in a similar situation with Nathaniel conversation wise during Think Aloud. I am trying to have a conversation to get his mind flowing so he can share his OWN ideas but he is trying to give the right answer because he answers everything in question form. It can be very frustrating. My daughter was like this for a long time and one day the light just switched on. Hopefully this happens for Nathaniel soon too. Keep up the good work Lucille. You have the added benefit of being able to converse with Charlene before and after the session in the car!

  3. One fun strategy that I'm doing with Donovin that might seem fun with Charlene is to revisit those word lists and make flash cards with them. Each time Donovin can say the word automatically and accurately...as well as spell it in the back of the card, we then add it to his word log (an envelope with all his known words). Meaning wise, I'm not there yet. But we do talk about what they mean when we're putting them into the envelope. Keep up the good work! See you both soon.
